ΙΣΛΑΝΔΙΑ – SELFOS

3rd Mobility- Selfoss Iceland: 23/10- 27/10

1st Day

All partners were welcomed by the host school teachers, taken to Selfoss town and visited www.skyrland.is where they learned about skyr and other dairy products.

In the afternoon teachers  visited Lava Centre where they discovered how it is to live in an active volcanic area. – Next stop was Seljalandsfoss waterfall. We got field trip to study how education can be related to natural cultural heritage. The results were video documentaries using I-pad or mobile.

2nd Day: 

Welcome activities by students from class 1st – 4th class in Reykholtsskóli. Students from 7th grade showed visitors around the school surroundings and told them about its facilities. There was also short free time for questions or visit to classes. 

Teachers used their knowledge from the day before to make a documentary of the Icelandic folklore that will be shown at their schools back home. 

In the afternoon, we attended a workshop in the school library on the use of digital tools and learning apps usable in everyday school life. Teachers studied how the whole school is interacting using many different digital apps( Google Classroom, TurfHunt, NearPod, Mentimeter, Ipads, Kahoot)

Teachers first observed how to use different digital teaching material and later experimented hands on how to do it.

In the evening, we were introduced on farm life and the origin of food at Efsti Dalur farm. 

3rd Day: 

Þingvellir national park. Walk around the park to see where Alþingi was founded and learn about the beautiful nature of this Unesco site. Teachers learned about the history and all the folk tales of Þingvellir by walking around the area with a guide. We learned about how the Vikings lived and got an understanding of how and why the folktales started. We also got a change to try TurfHunt, a scavenger hunt game app designed for use on mobile devices. – Visit to Laugarvatnshellar caves. We experienced how Icelandic families used to live and the folk tales told of this area about trolls and elves. 

4th Day: 

Visiting teachers taught Icelandic students about their folklore, in English, combining traditional with digital tools. Both students and teachers were enthusiastic about the lessons, which definitely were a unique moment in our mobility!! 

Afternoon: Friðheimar greenhouse and visit to the stables, where we learned about the unique Icelandic horse breed. 

Evening: Visit to Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot springs, where we tasted rye bread local people bake under the earth.

5th Day: 

Visit to the Secret Lagoon- bathing in warm natural water. 

Digital Workshop at school where teachers were trained on digital storytelling by using flipgrid and clips and saw how those simple apps can help in storytelling.

In the afternoon, a coordinators meeting was held, where the results of the 5 days were summarized and the plan for the forthcoming activities was set.
